Meet Joseph "JB" Burke and His Idea of Moving Morrow Forward
by Dana Hinders

HOTEL GENERAL MANAGER JOSEPH “JB” BURKE wants to showcase Morrow as a jewel with potential . “Facilities such as Spivey Hall and Clayton State University attract people from all over,” he said. “One little known fact is that we house the Consulate of Hungary in Morrow. There are several colleges and universities with campuses within the city. They chose to locate here because of our city’s positive reputation.”

According to Burke, his experience as a hotel manager would translate well into the task of running a city. “Well planned budgets are crucial to any operation,” he said. “A budget along with a feasibility plan will lead to success. Too often I have had major investors that crunched numbers and had no idea what it took to get those numbers. Understanding that a planned calendar for the city is also a crucial tool in attracting new business as well as convention commerce. Revenues from these events will add to the city’s budget and thus dictate the spending.”

Burke’s vision for the future of Morrow involves promoting growth in both the commercial and residential areas. “I want home values to increase, but it will take commercial and residential growth,” he said. “This growth can occur in less than five years if we are diligent. I would advertise in the metro publications the proximity of Morrow to the airport and to Metro Atlanta. I would make people aware of the fact we have very limited property taxes and have so many venues within Morrow that enriches life. I would ask city hall to consider tax incentives for new business and lease existing commercial square footage. We have such a wonderful resource in the Morrow Conference Center for mid-sized conferences and special events. I would make sure to promote this gem. I do feel as though the city council is on the right path. Tomorrow will be exciting for Morrow...Today!
